Advantages of Citizenship


Right to Vote
A U.S. Citizen may vote in local, state, and national elections.

Right to Immigrate Family Members A U.S. Citizen may immigrate a wider range of family members than a permanent resident, and the waiting list for relative of U.S. Citizens is shorter than for relatives of permanent residents.

Preservation of Public Benefits
U.S. Citizens are entitled to public benefits that are protected, while public benefits for Legal Permanent Residents are not always protected.

Increased Access to Public Employment
Some government and civil service jobs are only available to U.S. Citizens.

Right to Remain Outside of the U.S. for an Extended Period
U.S. Citizens may remain outside of the United States for a longer period of time, while Legal Permanent Residents who remain outside the U.S. for more than six months may lose their residency status or be denied re-entry.
